CCT postpones Senate President’s case indefinitely

The tribunal's chairman apologized for delaying the case, saying more time is needed before a final decision can be reached.

CCT chairman, Danladi Umar apologized for delaying the case, saying more time is needed before a final decision can be reached.

“We have received all the submissions. Myself and my colleague will look at all the issues raised. After which we will come back and give our ruling. We cannot pick a date now but as soon as we do, we will communicate it."

After accusations from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the former governor of Kwara state was charged to court in 2015 with 13 counts of false declarations when he was governor.

In defiance, the Senate President filed the no-case submission before the tribunal on May 26, 2017 saying all evidence presented by the prosecution lacks merit.

However, the federal government’s prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said a "serious prima facie case" has been established against the Senate President.

Saraki was governor of Kwara state for two terms between 2003 and 2011 and before he was elected into the Senate, and later became President in 2015.
