Our beauty editors combined have decades-plus experience, but leave it to Reddit to give us a new tip. Turn your bobby pin upside down; users promise it stays in place longer. WHAT? Mind. Blown.

Okay, so we may have been using bobby pins wrong our whole lives. Does it actually work? We had a Reddit-inspired convo with NYC hair pro Ashley Rubell to fact-check the claim.

WOMEN'S HEALTH: OKAY, SO HOW EXACTLY DOES THIS TRICK WORK?

Ashley Rubell: The jagged side has those curves for a reason. When you put them facing the scalp, the curves grip hair and the stopper sits on the head, securing it.

WH: GOT IT! WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO SLIDE THEM IN?

AR: Start pushing the pin in with the flat side down, but then, about halfway in, flip it so that the jagged side is facedown. It won't budge!

WH: BUT COULDN'T THAT DAMAGE YOUR HAIR BY SNAGGING IT?

AR: I'd use it only in areas where the hair is heavier and not in spots with finer, breakage-prone strands, like around your hairline.

WH: ANY OTHER BOBBY PIN TRICKS?

AR: The finish of your pins makes a huge difference. Look for matte ones—the texture of those tends to be grittier and less slippery than glossy pins.
