These days, it's practically unheard of for anyone cross over party lines, no matter the cause.

So that's why people were surprised Monday when Emily Ratajkowski (model, feminist, and vocal Bernie supporter) stood up for First Lady Melania Trump on Twitter.

“Sat next to a journalist from the NYT last night who told me ‘Melania is a hooker.’" she tweeted. "Whatever your politics it's crucial to call this out for what it is: slut shaming. I don't care about her nudes or sexual history and no one should." Comments like the ones she heard, Emily concludes, "are disgusting sexist bullsh-t." The particular journalist was not identified, but Emily did say it was a man in later tweets.

The exact context of the journalist's alleged commment is unknown, but it may have been in reference to a now-retracted and discredited story from the Daily Mail that claimed the First Lady allegedly worked as an escort while she was a model.

Melania is in the midst of an ongoing libel lawsuit against the Daily Mail that was recently re-filed in New York after being dismissed in Maryland, according to USA Today. The lawsuit says that the article damaged the First Lady's reputation.

Emily also seems to be referring in her tweets to resurfaced nude photos of Melania Trump from 1995.

A Trump campaign advisor in July said that "There's nothing to be embarassed about," in regards to the photographs, according to US Weekly.

Emily has long been a defender of a woman’s right to her sexuality.

She penned an essay for Lenny Letter about her sexuality in 2016, and she posed topless with Kim Kardashian West in an Instagram post that read: “We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn't mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality. #liberated.”

However, Emily is definitely not a fan of President Trump, telling the Evening Standard in May that he had a "loud mouth" and was "power-hungry."

She attended the Women’s March in January in response to Trump's inauguration.

The First Lady thanked Emily for her comments in a tweet on Monday night:

In her pro-women tweet, Emily makes a great point: Standing up for your core beliefs is more important that playing within party lines.
