This primer lets me leave the house without any makeup

I find that the primer on its own does such a good job at making my skin look its best that I don’t need anything else.

But there’s one catch for me: Unlike Alicia, I don’t have naturally great skin. Between my uneven complexion and regular acne flare-ups, it's not easy for me to put my bare face forward in public with confidence.

At least, until I discovered the Maybelline Face Studio Master Prime Blur and Illuminate Primer ($10, ulta.com) at a recent trip to the drugstore.

I usually require a layer of BB foundation on the daily to help hide red spots and even out my skin tone.

But this primer, used on its own, helps eliminate the need for any foundation on most days.

In fact, when I wore it to the grocery store the other weekend, a cashier looked at my face and said, “Wow, you have beautiful skin! Does it always look like that?”—a.k.a. words I have never before heard in my life.

This primer is super light—the water-based formula makes it glide on without feeling like a heavy additional layer on your skin.

I normally apply a thin layer on my face after using my normal face oil and moisturizer.

Almost immediately my pores look smaller, especially in my T-zone, and the red splotches on my face fade.

That label doesn’t say “blurring” for nothing! (We also love refreshing our complexion with this rejuvenating facial spray from the Women’s Health Boutique.)

The illuminating properties in the cream act like a built-in highlighter, helping to brighten tired skin.

Plus, it’s SPF 30, making it an easy way to get sun protection without adding another product to your face.

Its dermatologist-tested formulation also ensures that it doesn’t cause me any further irritation on my sensitive skin.

It’s meant to go on underneath makeup (after all, that’s what a primer is for) but I still have as yet to use it that way.

I can’t wait to test its powers in the dog days of summer, when it’s so humid that you dread having a layer of foundation on your face.

Sure, there are days where I need a little more coverage thanks to a fresh breakout or the after-effects of a particularly bad night of sleep.

But for most days, this affordable primer is super effective at convincing people that I woke up like this. And I’m totally okay with that.
