Religion should matter when choosing a partner, Pulse readers say

We asked readers if the decision to marry anyone should be influenced or affected by the person's religious beliefs.

In an opinion poll published here in February, we asked Pulse readers if the decision to marry anyone should be influenced or affected in any way by the person's religious beliefs.

"Would you marry someone of a different religion to yours?" we ask, and 58.8% say they definitely would not do that. Only 41.2% say they are up for it.

Religion and marriage

It may be 2018 but religion is still firmly a part of the Nigerian way of life. With the country vastly populated by churches, serious Christians, mosques and practicing Muslims, it is not difficult to see why religion still plays a part in the way people view life and how they make choices.

Taking a man with great husband and father qualities may still earn you the scorn of your family, and the raised eyebrows of other [unconcerned] parties if such man is not subscribed to your [family's] religion.

Take for example, VP Osinbajo's daughter, Damilola whose engagement to created a storm of sorts just because certain people thought she was marrying a Muslim despite being a Pastor's kid.

It's turned out that that was unnecessary worry and the pair have, in fact, gotten married in a beautiful ceremony on March 17 2018.

As for marriages and picking the best person to spend forever with, religion will still be around the corner, telling you who is right and who is not.

It seems there is still a long, long way before that stops. If it ever shall.
