3 underrated causes of divorce

You probably have not heard about these three things, but that won't stop them from eating away at your marriage.

Divorce problems

According to Jessica Elizabeth Opert, a London-based relationship coach these things might sound and actually be as terrible as they sound ‘but the truth is, it's the small missiles—the everyday action or lack of action—that severs the connection between two people, resulting in a loss of love."

And when love is gone, it won’t be long before other great things in the marriage get soaked away, leaving your marriage bare, dry and without essence.

So what are the “small missiles” that could blow your marriage to bits? Marriage experts give us their opinions below.

1. Loss of individuality

"Couples who spend a lot of time together—to the detriment of their individual interests—can have as many or even more relationship issues as couples who hardly see each other," says Sonya Bruner, a psychologist practicing in California.

This is not to say couples should stay separate from each other at all times. Of course no one would propose anything as ridiculous as that.

The thing is that, marriage does not necessarily have to be absolutely, totally and completely enmesh every facet of your lives.

You are still allowed, and as a matter of fact, advised to pursue individual interests, dreams and goals. You had a life before you met your partner, didn’t you?

2. Social media addiction

Dr. Bruner adds that social media is a growing factor in divorce. In several cases, spouses fail to draw the line between when to be active online, and when to shut down their apps and face their partner in communication and bonding time.

3. No more eye contact

Jessica Elizabeth Opert believes that "when you ask most people about how they knew their partner loved them, they will often say that it was the way that person looked at them."

Over time though, partners might become too drawn into other things that they forget to do this and keep winning points with their partners.

There is a form of connection that comes from eye contact that you and your partner stand to lose if you don’t keep up the eye contact.

“It may even prevent the release of phenylethylamine, a chemical that triggers feelings of romantic love,” Opert says.
