Jonah Hill is looking slim these days, seemingly overnight. And it’s not the first time. The Oscar-nominated actor is well-known for his roller coaster of rapid weight gain and weight loss, as we have reported in the past.
The thing is, dropping over 20 pounds and continuously gaining it all back comes with some health risks. Yo-yo dieting—losing weight quickly and then gaining it all back—can damage your cardiovascular system, suggests a study in the International Journal of Obesity.
Not only that, but research shows that extreme dieting, which may be something he’s doing, given that he drops weight so quickly, can increase your appetite, tank your mood, and potentially increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Now, in a photo published in an article by the Daily Mail, the Wolf of Wall Street star is captured looking trim again (not to mention, he’s smoking a cigarette, which is actually worse for you than any negative side effects you’d see from gaining 5 to 10 pounds after you quit).
The article admired his weight loss and highlighted one of the biggest factors that Hill claims affects his weight—his diet, which is full of beer (sounds about right for the average guy).
“I went to a nutritionist and I said, ‘I’ll lose weight, I’ll eat healthier and whatever, but figure out how I can drink beer,” Hill said on Kyle and Jackie O’s radio show last month.
“It’s so annoying because if I don’t drink beer, I get really really thin. Then when I drink beer, I get a little bigger.”
That’s because beer is full of empty calories. Just two cans a night can add up to more than 2,000 calories a week—almost a full day’s worth for some guys. Plus, the more you drink, the more you want to fill your plate with junk food.
Kudos to Hill for not wanting to deprive himself of something he loves, though. And good news is, you don’t have to completely give up booze to lose your belly.
While any changes he’s made have definitely led to undeniable results, we’re hoping Hill and his nutritionist find a plan that sticks, so he can finally make the change—the healthy way—for good.
