Can you do this explosive lunge variation?

Seriously. One rep. Give it a try.

That’s how Troy Brooks, an instructor at New York City’s Fhitting Room, sums up his personal mantra.

Brooks might be today’s MH Trainer of the Day—and the creator of one of the coolest lunge variations the MH Rec Room has ever seen—but fitness didn’t come naturally to the recently minted Lululemon ambassador.

“A couple of years ago, I was at home screenshotting workouts from Men’s Health on my iPad, doing them to lose 90 pounds,” Brooks says.

So it’s no surprise to see Brooks pushing the envelope to find out what he’s capable of. And during a recent visit to the MH Rec Room he showed us an exercise that’s become something of a signature move.

“This is called the gravity lunge,” says Brooks, describing what is essentially the double-under of jumping lunges.

Watch the video above to see Brooks demonstrate the movement, then try it out for yourself.

“This is going to take a bit of core control,” Brooks says. “Land nice and soft.”

If you’re not quite there yet, Brooks suggests first mastering the reverse lunge, forward lunge, split squat, and jumping lunge.

“Once you’ve got those under your belt, it’s go time,” he says. “Try about five to 10 of these on each leg. Let me know how they feel!”
