The research was published in PLOS ONE, a science journal. A group of researchers from Purdue University studies the effects of combining alcohol and caffeine, using adolescent mice.
The mice showed more increase in locomotor activity when they had been given caffeine and alcohol than when they had been given only caffeine.
One of the lead researchers in the study, Dr. Richard van Rijn says: "It seems the two substances together push them over a limit that causes changes in their behavior and changes the neurochemistry in their brains. We are clearly seeing effects of the combined drinks that we would not see if drinking one or the other."
The researchers came to the conclusion that the effects of mixing caffeine and alcohol are similar to the effects of cocaine. Also, the combination caffeine and alcohol leads to enhanced cocaine effects.
In other words, if you take caffeine and alcohol, then snort a line of cocaine afterwards, the cocaine gives a more intense level of high.
Van Rijn also says: "Mice that had been exposed to alcohol and caffeine were somewhat numb to the rewarding effects of cocaine as adults. Mice that were exposed to highly caffeinated alcoholic drinks later found cocaine wasn’t as pleasurable. They may then use more cocaine to get the same effect."
This is because mice that consumed caffeine plus alcohol showed an increased level of the protein FosB, which indicates long-term changes in brain chemistry often associated with drug use.
Drinking Red Bull vodkas is just about the same as snorting a line of cocaine because if the effects it has on the brain.
