The commercial city, Onitsha, Anambra annually celebrates Ofala festival under the leadership of their monarch.
The annual celebration is also part of the new Yam Festival. It was celebrated in a grand manner and it attracted guests from far and wide.
On the day preceding Ofala, the people of the city marched in a procession through the major streets in Onitsha. They were grouped according to their different age groups and they sported colourful costumes, drums, wooden guns, dane guns etc.
They marched from the palace to the two major shrines, Ani Onicha to appease the gods of the land. The procession included the Obi in a motorcade.
On the Ofala day, the Obi presented himself to his subjects who showered him with blessings and prayers> He was colourfully and royally dressed in traditional regalia and he brandished his staff of office.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as the governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano and the Amanyanabo of Opobo and Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Majesty, King Dandison Douglas Jaja Jeki V.
The Obi, Igwe Achebe thanked Governor Obiano for his support, adding that he was a true son of the soil. He also thanked King Dandison Douglas Jaja Jeki V, and the other traditional rulers who attended the festival.
