The fact that we are what we eat cannot be stressed enough, our diet affects every part of our bodies and lives.

To keep your memory sharp, you have to eat foods that are great for brain function and avoid overly processed foods.

Saturated fat, common in red meat and dairy may allow plaque build up in your blood vessels, causing inflammation throughout the body, brain inclusive.

Here are five foods that can increase your brain function and memory over a period of time:

The monounsaturated fats found in olive oil can help improve your cholesterol, which reduces chances of memory loss.

Dark, leafy, green vegetables contain high amounts of folate and vitamin B12, which help to maintain healthy nerve cells.

The darker the vegetables, the better, so look out for vegetables such as kale and spinach. They also contain carotenoids like lutein and xanthine, that act like antioxidants to cross the blood brain barrier, improving cognition.
