Top 10 trends of 2016

Fashion shows each year are not just about showcasing designs, they set the pace for the year in womenswear.

Stylists and fashion consultants look out for the most common factors across the board and most of these factors become trends that we imbibe in our way in the Nigerian fashion industry.

These styles are huge on statement factor, no matter what you’re looking for. Check out the biggest womenswear trends from the major international runways:

Off shoulder neckline: Designers focused this year on showcasing the shoulder, making clothes more open and comfortable to wear. This will work well with the Nigerian weather climate.

Button down shirts: It’s the revolution of button down shirts. The women have taken it from the men and glamorized it with a high-fashion twist.

Revamped lingerie: Thanks to the likes of Rihanna who’ve found a way to make underwear into over wear, designers are taking a cue and are making them into sexy night time outfits.

Fabric mix: Nigeria already has a head start in mixing fabrics, designs and patterns such as prints. We are seeing more of that on the international scene this year. However, they are getting more artistic with lace paneling, and piling on studding, sculptural fabrics, and 3D accents.

Pleating: This isn’t for high school uniforms anymore. Designers are using it to create the new nerdy cool. Taking pleats and creating sculptural silhouettes.

Shine on: You can never go wrong with some  bling. Designers are taking style up a notch by creating shimmery everyday wear such as shorts, so no need to wait for cocktail parties to get your shine on.

Classic look: Classic looks are showcased on more suits and statement dresses this year.

Victorian times: People say fashion gets recycled and we’re seeing that in 2016. Designs are showcasing high necklines, ruffled sleeves, and regal details. However, it’s being remodelled to modern looks with short hemlines, sheer finishes, notice-me fabrics, and even denim.

Wrap it up: Wrap skirts are designed to tease with a little show of skin, so you can still be allowed into the office and maybe church.

Tie it tight: There’s never been a better time to synch in the waist like now. Designers are making the hourglass effect effortless with the use of sashes and belts on most outfit.
