5 ways to kick-start your styling career

If you're not sure how to get your big start in styling, we have some tips for you.

Attend Fashion Events

Whether you manage to score an invite have to sneak in, it's great to see the clothes come down the runway. It gives you a chance to see the fabrics up close, and get a sense for how they move on the body.

Attending fashion-related events are a good way to show your face, network, and be surrounded by the pros. So even if you get shafted with your view at the show— the afterparty could be more productive.

Do Your Homework

Even if you don't go to school for fashion, there are a few easy ways to learn about the details. Most people live near department stores, and if you're lucky, there's probably even a high-end boutique you can get to. Compare pants and shirts you own to the pricier stuff, and really try to notice the differences in cuts and design. Turn those same garments inside out to see how they're made.

It goes without saying that any good fashion stylist must have a  passion for fashion and a keen eye for detail. In addition you must be constantly researching the most recent trends and colour schemes, be on the lookout  for emerging fashion trends and be in the know about fashion labels. It will help if you watch fashion shows on websites read fashion magazines, fashion blogs and regularly look at top fashion sites.

Use Social Media

Social media is crucial  for a number of reasons: It simply puts more people onto your work, plus brands like it when you post looks with credits and it makes it easier for editors like us to identify what someone is wearing.

It can also lead to stylists becoming influencers in their own right.

Work in a Local Boutique

Not only will working in a boutique familiarise you with brands and styling, it will also allow you to build a client base in your community.

Reach Out to Other Stylists

As in any field, networking is key. If you’re just starting out, it’s smart to reach out to stylists you admire so you can meet or perhaps even work with them.

Research people in your field who align with your values, and watch (and if you can, meet) them to learn how and why they pursued their passion.
