Polio Katsina, Zamfara wins Dangote, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation award

Katsina and Zamfara states have emerged winners of the Dangote and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations' award for their relentless campaign against polio, which led to the successful eradication of the disease within the two states.

Katsina and Zamfara states have emerged winners of the Dangote and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations' award for their relentless campaign against polio, which led to the successful eradication of the disease within the two states.

According to Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, SSA Media to Katsina state Governor, the award of one million US Dollars each to the states was announced at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for routine immunisation between the two states on the one hand and Dangote and Bill/Melinda Gates Foundations on the other.

Whereas Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina state and his Zamfara state counterpart, Hon. AbdulAziz Yari signed on behalf of their respective states, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Bill Gates signed on behalf of their respective foundations, the Dangote Foundation and the Bill and  Melinda Gates Foundation.

Celebrating the two states, Messrs Dangote and Gates said that they were worthy winners of the money as they showed total commitment in the fight against polio in their respective states.

The benefactors, who took turns to speak, urged the governors to sustain the tempo and keep their states free of polio and other diseases assuring that the foundations will be monitoring the implementation of the later and spirit of the MoU by the two states.

The two governors, who also took turns to speak, promised to up their performance in the campaigns against polio and other diseases, promising to always remain alive to their part of the bargain, especially in the payment of counter funding.

Governor Masari, while thanking the benefactors for their magnanimity, said the award would particularly strengthen the resolve of his government, which has made the improvement of health delivery as one of its priorities. He also assured that Katsina state would always be prompt in settling its counter funding obligations.

The prize money is to be used for the purchase of cold chain equipment for the storage of vaccines.
The occasion was witnessed by the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, the Executive Secretary of National Primary Health Care, Dr. Ado Muhammed and the Country representative of UNICEF, Mrs. Gould.
