Medical doctors in Owerri, Imo state have taken to the streets in protest demanding for the sack of the Chief Medical Officer (CMD), Dr. Angela Uwakwe, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri.

The medical and allied health workers have been on strike for over 2 months over their agitations, accusing the CMD of highhandedness and such inhuman policies as the Public Private Partnership (PPP), which they claim could lead to mass retrenchment in the institution.

Vowing not to resume work till Uwakwe is sacked, placard-carrying protesters blocked the FMC gates on Tuesday chanting solidarity songs and causing major gridlock on Orlu Road and the adjourning areas.

Earlier on, Governor Rochas Okorocha had pleaded with the workers to return to work, to no avail.

The Guardian reports that while Uwakwem was not available for comments, an anonymous close ally told the paper that the allegations against her were baseless, adding that the CMD would not yield to the demands.
