4 men sentenced to death for rape-murder of 8-yr-old girl

Four men who gang-raped an 8-year-old girl before murdering her have been sentenced to death in India.

Four men who gang-raped and murdered a eight-year-old girl in the Indian village of Langate in North Kashmir of that country, have been sentenced to death in a landslide judgement that has drawn applause and commendations, reports India Today.

While sentencing the suspects, Sadiq Mir, alias Sadiq Choor, Azhar Mir, alias Bilal, Jehangir and Suresh, Judge Muhammad Ibrahim termed the offence as the rarest of rare, observing that the convicts were a menace to society and to 'conceal their evil deed, they have committed drastic and extreme brutal acts which has resulted in depriving the life of a minor who was helpless and innocent.'

After the judgment, the family members of the girl broke down and lauded the investigators for ensuring justice.

The girl's father said:

"We have been waiting for this judgment for many years. Now, we all want the culprits to be hanged. Till then, we will be restless.

My daughter was only eight years old when she was brutally killed. I want this type of crime to never take place again in the country."

India Today reports that on July 20, 2007, the body of the Class VIII student was recovered from an apple orchard. The murder of the girl sparked protests across the Valley and then chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had announced a cash reward for information on the culprits.

A special police team was constituted to probe the incident and after a through investigation, the four men were arrested.

During the investigation, it was found that the girl who was going to home from school was abducted by the convicts, who raped her and later slit her throat in the orchard.
