Clowns are meant to be funny, but when scary looking 'killer clowns' start showing up in dark places, then it is no longer a laughing matter.

The latest craze sweeping across the United States of America is the killer clowns prank, clowns that look evil.

From August, there have been several sightings of killer clowns in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee, Phoenix, New York, Houston, Idaho and Connecticut.

These sightings have been known as the Killer Clown Prank, scaring kids and freaking out adults. It is now known as Killer Clown Prank. In Connecticut, the police have stepped up security around schools as concerns have been raised about the sighting of these 'killer clowns'.

Killer clowns prank started in the 80s. In 1990 the Stephen King adaptation 'IT' appeared on the screen. The horror mini-series featured the evil clown known as Pennywise. This series would go on to make clowns a whole lot spooky for children across the world, including me. For years I couldn't stand clowns and the image of Pennywise in a sewer haunted my dreams alongside Beethoven's haunting 'Fur Elise'.

After the early 90s, 'killer clowns' disappeared and many kids forgot about the horrors of Pennywise. Then in 2014, during the fourth season of America Horror Story another killer clown appeared on the TV screen.

Twisty the Clown, a clown with the most spooky grin ever brought back the killer clown back to TV. Two years later, it was announced that there will be a remake of 'IT'. Yes, Pennywise is coming back to cinemas in 2017.

So after Twisty slaughters people on TV and Pennywise is scheduled to make a comeback,  killer clowns are being sighted all over America. Any correlation?

According to Loren Coleman, a cryptozoologist, the killer clown prank boils down to 'The Phantom Clown Theory' which claims that these sightings are caused by a mass hysteria caused by sightings by little kids.

It is my belief that the pranks have been sparked by a resurgence of 'killer clowns' on the screen. People are just taking what they see on TV and acting it out in real life just for fun...but what happens if one of these killer clowns is actually a killer.
