Woman impaled by spikes while scaling fence

A mother-of-three has died after she accidentally impaled herself on a fence in South Carolina.

Cheryl Renee Maury, 33, was trying to scale a fence surrounding an outdoor swimming pool in Greer with a friend shortly after midnight on Tuesday when she lost her footing and fell, WYFF4 reports.

Her pelvis area and upper leg were impaled by a spike on the wrought-iron fence, severing at least one major artery and causing her to bleed heavily from the wound. Her horrified friend called 911.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they cut the fence 'as quickly as possible', Coroner Parks Evans said. They then rushed Maury to hospital with part of the metal spike still in her leg.

The married mother-of-three died during emergency surgery at 2.57am, according to WYFF4.

It is not clear whether Maury, who lived with her family in Greer, was attempting to scale the fence at around 12.40am in a bid to go swimming in the neighborhood pool, or for other unknown reasons.
