Scott Langley hits the front at Travelers Championship

Scott Langley shot a five-under par-65 to surge one shot clear after the second round of the Travelers Championship on Friday.

Langley holed eight birdies to catapult himself to the top of the leaderboard at 11 under at the TPC River Highlands.

The American golfer, who missed the cut last year, was two shots off the pace at the start of play but a faultless front nine - that included four birdies - helped him pull clear of Michael Putnam, KJ Choi and Harris English.

"I've been in contention. I played in the final group on Sunday at Memorial," said Langley, whose only top-three finish this season came at the Valspar Championship in March.

"This weekend, I'm not going to think about possibilities. I'm not going to think about what it means to win.

"I'm not going to think about any of that stuff. I'm just going to keep my head down and play my game."

American pair Putnam (63) and English (64), and South Korea's Choi (65) are tied for second at 10 under heading into day three.

Overnight leader Brendan Steele endured a forgettable round as he found himself in a four-way tie for fifth spot.

Steele had five bogeys and a double-bogey for his round of 69 to be two shots off the pace at nine under.

The American is joined by compatriots Ryan Moore (68), Eric Axley (67) and Jamie Lovemark (63).

American Dustin Johnson is a shot further back - occupying sole possession of ninth spot following his 66.
