Many tribes in Nigeria, nay Africa, place a lot of emphasis on the male child and any couple who are not fortunate to be blessed with one is seen as a curse to the family.
Readers believe family pressure puts emphasis on couple to get a male child
Majority of Pulse Nigeria Poll voters believe that family pressure takes its toll on a couple's clamour for a male child.
In most cases, the blame is shifted on the woman as if she is the one to put the much needed son in her womb.
That is the dilemma Pulse reader, Bernadette Okorie has been facing that made her write in seeking for advice from other fans.
In her words:
"My name is Bernadette Okorie and I have been married for eight years with three beautiful daughters. My husband has never shirked in his love for his family but the problem I have had consistently is his family's insistence on a male child who they say will be the heir to to his 'throne'.
There is nothing they have not done to cause disaffection between my husband and I but being the good husband he is, he has always stood up for me.
But in recent times, the troubles have become more pronounced as they have given him an ultimatum to either get a second wife or they will kick me out, with some of them even accusing me of bewitching my husband. His mother even said I must have committed so many abortions and killed all the male children in me.
My confusion in all of this is: why is so much importance attached to male children?"
On that note, a poll was put out for voters to state why they think so much emphasis is placed on the male child.
This is how Nigeria voted:
25 % - The wife
25 % - The husband
50 % - Family pressure
So who do you think is to be blamed for this?
