'Indecent dressing is not an invitation to rape'

Men and women should learn to discuss rape in a cool and non-confrontational way without adopting the battle of the sexes mentality.

'Indecent dressing is not an invitation to rape'

I left my IPad in my car, the smart thing to do would be to keep it in the safe and lock my car right?

However, let's say I left it in the front seat of the car, leave the windows down, and leave the car unlocked. And it gets stolen.

Did I deserve to have my tablet stolen? No. Was the theft a crime? Of course.

Before I get hounded by the feminists, please note: I  also despise the argument that only the scantily clad get ambushed by predatory rapists and that any woman wishing not to get raped should put more clothes on.

I agree that the way a woman chooses to dress is NEVER the cause of a sexual crime committed against her.

Lets be honest, it is never about the revealing or the covered woman. Women living in the North dress modestly and they still get raped.

I walk on the streets in broad daylight in my black flowing Abaya and I still get the annoying cat calls. Does my dress mean I am asking for it?

Women in India put on modest saris and they are sexually assaulted too. Does that mean they were asking for it too?

I do not understand people who hold ridiculous beliefs around how revealing clothes supposedly increase the risk of sexual assault.

I do not understand them, same way that I do not understand those who say "I should be able to wear whatever I want and have no fear of rape."

First of all, no one is completely free to dress however he or she pleases. Second of all, although no one deserves rape, there are ways to prevent it. Women are strong, and do not deserve to be sexually assaulted. Strong women also have respect for themselves. Wearing provocative clothing doesn't mean they deserve to be raped, but it increases the vulnerability of women.

On the other hand, after reading arguments from both sides I still have a problem with people who say that the woman should expect that nothing will happen to them no matter how scantily clad they dress, and no matter where they may go. To speak like this is to be naive of the way the real world works.

While it is important as a culture to teach our sons to respect women, I think women should learn to respect themselves.

I wouldn't advise my sisters or daughters to go out in the dark in ‘that short skirt’, as my mother advised me.

I would probably tell her it’s a good idea to be modest but should the worst happen, she would get no blame from me.

One factor, and one alone, influences whether or not a woman gets raped — and that’s the will of the man contemplating it.

Clothing is not a significant factor in sexual violence.

Sexual aggressors are going to be aggressive, regardless of who wears how little. Even if people give up mini-skirts, bum shots and provocative dresses en masse, women would still be subject to sexual violence.

We really need to stop talking about how provocative dresses incite men and focus considerably more on why men rape at all.

The prevailing myth that women ‘ask’ for rape by adopting certain clothing or behaviour is highly dangerous.

On the other hand, I think men and women should also learn to discuss rape in a cool and non-confrontational way without adopting the battle of the sexes mentality.

Same way you should not @ me if you don't agree with the opinion stated above.

But if you like books, do @ me. Peace!
