Man sentenced to 3 years in prison for insulting women

Egypt’s top prosecutor has sentenced a man to three years in prison after he made comments about married women in Egypt being unfaithful.

Taymour el-Sobky who runs a Facebook page titled The Diary of a Crushed Husband, made the comments during a television talk show in December, according to Al-Ahram newspaper.

“These days, it is very normal for women to cheat on their husbands and seek it out ... Many women are involved in extramarital affairs while their husbands are abroad.”

“Thirty percent of Egyptian women are ready for immorality, they just can’t find someone to encourage them,” Sobky added, whose Facebook page, “Diaries of a Suffering Husband”, has more than one million followers.

Footage of his views appeared on social media last month, which caused a public outcry that led to his arrest.

He has been accused of slandering women and damaging their honour.

He said they were taken out of context.

El-Sobky was sentenced by a court in Giza and is still in custody.

An appeal is scheduled for March 30.

His trial will be the latest milestone in Egypt’s so-called morality crackdown which recently saw a leading author sentenced to two years prison for penning a racy novel.

Although the book had been approved by Egyptian censors, the case was brought to court after one reader, Hani Tawfik, filed a lawsuit complaining that an exerpt had caused his “blood pressure to fall” and made him physically ill. Telegraph reported.

Egypt is a conservative, predominantly Muslim country where women are treated with respect and sex outside of marriage is frowned upon.
