Most prominent in the country's history is the brutal murder of Jyoti Singh Pandey, who was gang raped by six men and a minor on a moving bus in December 2012.
This led to a series of protest in favour of Pandey who despite surviving the attack eventually kicked the bucket on her way for a treatment in Singapore.
