Father poisons 1-month baby to death because he hated wife
An heartless father has been arrested for poisoning his daughter to death because he wanted to divorce his wife.
The sad incident which threw residents of Toluwalase Estate, Ijoko-Abule, in the Lemode area of Ogun State, into total confusion, reportedly happened in the morning of Friday, July 24.
According to reports, the mother of the baby, Abosede Ogundare, had left her with her father to sweep their compound only to come back to meet the healthy baby foaming in the mouth and gasping for breath.
The distraught mother raised an alarm which attracted neighbours and with the suspicion of poisoning, Olajide was searched and a bottle containing pesticide was discovered in his trouser pocket.
The poor baby was then rushed to an hospital in the area but she later died from swallowing the substance.
On learning that his daughter had died, Olajide attempted to flee the community but was apprehended by residents who later handed him to the police at the Agbado Police Division where he confessed to the crime.
A neighbour of the Olajides who claimed to be in the know of the several quarrels between the couple, said Olajide had been threatening to divorce his wife before then.
The neighbour said:
“He doesn’t love the woman and has been trying to divorce her. He poisoned the innocent baby to actualise his mission. They recently moved to this estate. She was their only child.”
His landlord, also confirmed that Olajide had earlier denied the paternity of the baby.
“Three days before the incident, Kazeem (Olajide) was looking for a pair of his slippers. When he did not find it on time, he started raining curses.
I called him by his daughter’s name, and tried to caution him, but he warned me not to call him by her name again. It was when the incident happened that I realised he might have intentionally killed the child.”
