Nomoreloss Speaks On Music, Entertainment & The Nigerian Media.

Pulse.com.ng had a long chat with MTN Project Fame judge, music artiste and TV personality Muyiwa Osinuga popularly known as Nomoreloss, who spoke on various issues affecting the Nigerian entertainment industry, the way forward and his personal plans. It was a very insightful, informative as well as educative chat. We advise that you do not miss any edition of this interview as we shall bring them to you in series. Do read, enjoy and be informed!

It’s really a shame there has been a steady decline in the amount of work, not just in Nigeria but in the world over, because of the ‘cut and paste’ way of doing things. If you want to prove me wrong, go on the internet and check it out, take for example the Don Jazzy and D’banj story, it’s a ‘cut and paste’ all the way, one person gets a story and everybody uses the same thing! That is what I call “media dead” they are creatively dead. Whatever happened to research, asking questions, going to the source, everybody is too lazy to write something, so they all copy.

I agree that a greater percentage of Nigerian artistes are arrogant, but if you study some of them you will realise where the arrogance stems from, nobody or any media practitioner in Nigeria right now that is business focused is in the business of helping the Nigerian artiste. So it’s like telling someone you won’t amount to much, he then amounts to much, do you think he’ll give a damn about you. I understand some of them, for me sometimes its justifiable and sometimes it’s not, but I think your work should be your focal point of celebration not your personal life.

The media people for me aren’t helping anybody and I am being blunt about it. I have met a lot of good writers in entertainment who know what they ought to be doing, I say “ought” because they know but are not doing it because they are looking at it from the “What’s it in for me” point of view, and that is a syndrome that came about because there is no structure. If there was a structure in place you will understand. Let’s look at the normal chain international, if an artiste makes money, his manger makes money, his record label makes money, the record label’s A&R makes money, the printer who prints his CD’s makes money and the chain goes on. But in Nigeria people use a very subservient language of “Help you” nobody is helping you, Rhythm, Nigizie or any media house is not setup as a charity organization, so why do you now have to view your work with artistes as ‘Help?’ so I am saying let everybody know his place so we can be better structured and everyone can make money. Because you will be shocked that not so many artistes can show you the bank statement of what they are earning from show business with tax clearance, I can challenge anybody to that. That is why they will never get the “Monies” that have been released by the federal government or other structured organizations, that are asking questions; “show me your finance, show me your business plan and your projections.” But they don’t have it, it’s all a farce!

Internationally record labels have structured deals with radio stations, through which artistes get the required air play for no charge and can also return the favour for the station during shows. This in turn promotes the artiste and the radio station as well, depending on how good the artiste is. Now where are these yardsticks and these structures in Nigeria? NBC is practically asleep! It is more like a witch hunt. Once they don’t like an artiste just because of one song he has done, they ban him, but for the Bulk of the international artistes that we play, who is banning them when they use curse words on national radio? Nobody!

So the issues are very huge, and we need to look at them critically. And because of our subservient nature as artistes and people that know the right thing to do but won’t do it, nobody is saying anything. Artistes are being ripped off daily by radio stations in Nigeria. Who is regulating the so called 70% local and 30% foreign airplay to protect our local music content? Nobody! Yes we COSON and other bodies that are supposed to be collecting rights for the artistes, how many of these artistes have collected enough to buy a brand new car from his earnings in a nation of about 160 million people? Let’s just look at 10% of that, the artiste should not be hungry, but everybody isn’t doing what they ought to be doing. That is why you find half baked people doing half baked jobs!
