The New York Yankees swept the Toronto Blue Jays with a 6-4 win in MLB on Thursday, to close in on their Canadian rivals.
Phelps allowed just two runs and struck out seven bats, while Carlos Beltran batted in two runs for the victors.
Also in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox fell to a 4-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics, and the Tampa Bay Rays celebrated a 5-0 shutout of the Houston Astros.
The Detroit Tigers ended the Kansas City Royals' winning streak with a 2-1 victory over their AL Central rivals.

The Tigers lost their divisional lead to the Royals after the latter won 10 straight games, but Detroit are back within half-a-game of top spot.
The Cleveland Indians are 2.5 games behind Kansas City, after a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, while the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 to move within a game of escaping bottom spot in the division.
The Athletics' win over the Red Sox sees them top the AL's West division by six games, after the Angels lost.
In the National League, East division leaders the Washington Nationals were shutout 3-0 by closest rivals the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves are back within half-a-game of the Nats, in a see-sawing battle for supremacy.

The Miami Marlins are 1.5 games off the Nats, after they succumbed to a 1-0 loss to the New York Mets.
Four games off the pace, the Philadelphia Phillies strung together a fourth straight victory - a 4-1 result over the St Louis Cardinals.
NL Central pace-setters the Milwaukee Brewers downed the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1, to move 4.5 games clear of the Cardinals.
The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Cincinnati Reds 4-3.
The San Diego Padres won consecutive matches, beating the Seattle Mariners 4-1 to be 12.5 games behind NL West leaders the San Francisco Giants.
