New York Yankees sweep Cincinnati Reds, Jon Lester impresses

The New York Yankees got lucky to complete a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in MLB on Sunday, while Jon Lester starred for the Boston Red Sox.

Brian McCann singled on a soft pop up to see the Yankees to a 3-2 win and a three-game sweep of the Reds.

The Reds had tied the game in the top of the eighth and it looked headed for extra innings before a dreadful error.

What should have been a simple play fell between three onlooking players and Jacoby Ellsbury scampered home to score.

It saw the Yankees close to within three games of the American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles, who were thrashed 10-2 by the Oakland Athletics.

The Toronto Blue Jays are also three games back after they claimed a series win over the Texas Rangers with a 9-6 victory at the Rogers Centre.

The Red Sox made it four straight wins as Lester threw eight scoreless innings in their 6-0 thrashing of the Kansas City Royals.

Daniel Nava had three RBIs as the Red Sox recorded their seventh win in their past eight outings.

Pitcher Brad Hand's strong seven innings and first win as a starter since 2011 helped the Miami Marlins past the San Francisco Giants 3-2.

Jayson Werth hit a walk-off double for the Washington Nationals, who beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4.

Seth Smith also hit a walk-off single as the San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 2-1, while the Los Angeles Dodgers were 4-3 winners against the St Louis Cardinals.

The Detroit Tigers ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Cleveland Indians and the Pittsburgh Pirates overcame the Colorado Rockies 5-3.
