4 remanded in jail for land grabbing

A Federal High Court has remanded four men for alleged land grabbing in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos state.

The accused identified as 25-year-old Ganiyu Alabi, David Murphy, 27, Folarin Isiaka, 42, and 28-year-old Kehinde Musa, were remanded in jail by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, November 18, Punch reports.

The suspects were arraigned on  six counts bordering on land grabbing by the police and are accused of attacking seven communities at Oko-Olomi, Ibeju Lekki, and demolishing several houses standing on 1,561 hectares of land.

According to the prosecutor, the defendants, armed with guns and cutlasses, allegedly conspired with some other persons who are still at large, to invade the communities at about 8am on April 17, 2016.

According to Punch, the accused' are also accused of beating up residents of the communities and inflicting bodily harm on the victims identified as Muniru Salia, Raji Adisa, Kamol Agoro, Bariu Abuogunloko, Edward Onwunle, Tolani Anifowoshe, Tajudeen Eleku, Kufuli Babatunde, Waliu Alabi, Mohammed Quadri, Ajoke Abiodun and Taiwo Agbaje.

Following the actions, the defendants reportedly went on to demolish the homes of the victims.

According to the police, three pump-action guns and one double-barrelled gun were recovered from the defendants.

The crime reportedly contravened sections 86, 355, 390, 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code.

The defendants were also accused of violating  Section 27(1)(a)(I) of the Firearms Act Cap F28, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

However, Punch reports that the accused' pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them.

Justice Ibrahim Buba ordered them remanded in police custody before  adjourning the case until November 24, 2016, for the hearing of their bail applications.
