Drunk tourist detained after killing police officer
Spanish authorities have detained a French tourist for hitting and killing a police officer while driving.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, September 14, when the 35-year-old tourist was four times over the drink-drive limit.
Identified by the authorities as Florence, the tourist was driving with a friend when she ran into the victim who was cycling with his eight-year-old son.
A spokesman for the Guardia Civil Police Force told AFP said:
“He was sent to hospital in a critical state and died there."
The 44-year-old victim worked as a police officer in Palma de Majorca, the capital of the island.
A video of the aftermath of the accident posted by local media outlets showed a blonde, handcuffed at the scene, while she asked the police to let her go in French, adding that she is a nurse.
A spokeswoman for the High Court of the Balearic Islands disclosed that Florence was detained and charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The tourist is reported to have gotten out of her car and attempted to revive the man after the accident.
Florence reportedly told the judge that she and her friend have shared a bottle of white wine, and later shot liqueur at a restaurant, two more at another place.
The case is still in court while the tourist is held in Spain pending trial.
