An Ikeja Chief Magistrates' Court on Tuesday sentenced one Henry Okeke, 23, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing two cartons of Malta Guinness drink and a motorcycle, all valued at N155,000.

Chief Magistrate O.A. Layinka in her judgment gave no option of fine to the convict tried for stealing.

"The accused is to serve his jail-term in Kirikiri Prison to serve as a deterrent to others,’’ she ruled.

The unemployed accused is a resident of Abolaji Street, Mafoluku in Oshodi, a suburb of Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict was initially arraigned on July 18.

Then, he pleaded guilty to the offence and was subsequently remanded.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, during the arraignment, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 13 at his residence.

Perezi said that the accused was caught around 4 a.m. with two cartons of Malta Guinness drink and one of his neighbour's motorcycle, both valued at N155,000.

"The accused had tied the cartons of the Malta Guinness on the stolen motor cycle and was about to ride it away when he was caught."

The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
