80 prison inmates develop mental problems
Some prison inmates observed to have a strange behaviour were sent to an asylum for mental care.
This information was revealed by Kalu Ikpe, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Abia Command, at a press briefing in Aba on Friday, August 19, 2016, Daily Post reports.
According to Ikpe, many of the prison mates currently serving their jail term, have been sent to an asylum following a strange behaviourial change.

He said, “Sometimes even here in Umuahia where there is no asylum, we receive them but when after sometimes we observe a strange behaviour, we do a referral and send them to Aba where there is an asylum,"
“Those who are not normal are put under observation and are made to see psychiatric doctors who work daily to ensure that their drugs are administered."
“You know that the prison inmates are our brothers, so we cannot abandon them,”
The prison PRO also stated that there is a consideration for the release of some of these inmates, but this will be based on the nature of their crimes.
