Groom abandons new bride, flees registry after sighting wife

A man who thought he was being smart by organising a secret marriage while still married was given the shock of his life when the wife appeared at the wedding.

The hilarious scenario which happened at a marriage registry at the Oredo local government council of Edo State, played out like a scene from a Nollywood movie when a 57-year-old groom, identified as Valentine, had to take to his heels and abandon his new bride on seeing his real wife, thereby truncating what would have been a marriage ceremony.

Eyewitnesses reveal that Valentine who has been married for the whole of 17 years, decided to take another wife secretly without informing both women of his status, not knowing that nothing is hidden under the sun as information leaked to the real wife.

The woman decided to play the ignorant wife and allowed the man to fool himself by believing that she did not know anything about his plans. But she had a plan up her sleeves which she unleashed on the day the registry marriage was to take place.

She stormed the venue with her children and friends to disrupt the marriage and on seeing the troop, the groom decided to negotiate with his heels, leaving his bride to her fate.

Sources close to the family disclosed that the runaway groom who is a serial husband, had in the past, approached another marriage registry in a different location in Delta State, where he was said to secretly contracted another marriage.

He was said to have perfected plans to formalise his relationship secretly with his latest lover when on the said day, he invited few of his trusted friends to witness the occasion.

"Unknown to him, information about the arrangement of the new marriage had leaked to his first wife who had four children for him, and she subsequently mobilised other women who stormed the venue to disrupt the administration of marital vow."

The embattled wife was said to have narrated to the bewildered crowd that her husband abandoned his responsibilities to the family since he got involved with his new spouse, adding that several attempts to save the marriage did not yield the desire results.

"I had to do this because I’m convinced my husband must have been bewitched by the lady because since the rumour began making rounds, he has stopped taking care of his four children.

Each time he is confronted to provide money for our upkeep, he often complained of not having money."

It was also gathered that she threatened to take legal action against the council should they go ahead on a later date to wed her husband and his new babe, insisting that she remains his legal wife.
