Prominent businessman arrested in connection to cocaine smuggling
Authorities of the Benin Republic have arrested a businessman in connection to cocaine trafficking.
The hard drug was found in a shipping container at the port of Cotonou on Thursday, October 27, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Boris Tchilao who is the head of the country’s maritime military police disclosed that the shipment belongs to Ajavon.
According to NAN, Ajavon who was a former presidential candidate in the last election held in the country, has denied the allegations.
The suspect claimed that the discovery was politically motivated and designed to tarnish his image and destroy his business.
In the last decade, Benin amongst other West African countries has gained notoriety for being a major transit point for cocaine grown in Latin America and on its way to Europe.
