A 64-year-old woman from Ghana, Rose Amanor, has been sentenced to a 27-months jail term by a New York City Court after she was arrested at the Kennedy International Airport while trying to smuggle Heroin into that country.

The drugs were stuffed inside a haul of dry fish after disembarking from a flight from Amsterdam last year.

According to the reporters, Amanor was travelling with three kilograms of the drug and when she was arrested, she claimed that her son had given her the bag to take into the US.

At her arraignment, her lawyers pleaded for leniency citing her advanced age and poor health, requesting a short sentence so she could return to Africa, but the Federal Judge, Eric Vitaliano, thought otherwise, saying Amanor had told ‘incessant number of fishy stories'

"I find it totally incredible that Mrs. Amanor didn’t know what it was that she was doing. It certainly was a disrespect for the law, sitting in this courtroom and spinning this incredible tale under oath."

The judge pointed out that if Amanor  had not been intercepted, the drugs would have wreaked havoc on young people the country.
