Man nabbed for stealing N3.2m during PDP campaign rally

A thief who breaks into cars at functions to steal has been nabbed after he stole N3.2 million during a PDP rally in Ogun State.

It was the end of the day for a suspected serial thief, Tokunbo Ojo, who was arrested after he allegedly used a master key to open a car and steal the sum of N3.2 million at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Apart from the PDP rally, the 49-year-old Ojo who hails from Aramoko in Ekiti State, also confessed that he has been stealing from vehicles at different public functions like weddings, burials, dedications and other social events in Lagos, declaring that the Abeokuta rally was his biggest pay day.

Ojo was nabbed by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on Tuesday, April 14, 2015.

In a police report, the suspect had the master key made for him by a welder in 2013 and since then, he has broken into several cars and homes to steal cash and valuables running into millions of naira.

The father of two who lives with his family on Agbotikuyo Street, Agege, says he usually dresses expensively and pretended to be an important guest at the events before he struck.

"I used to work as a house painter. But in 2013, my work was no longer flourishing. So I developed the idea of using a master key to steal.

I consulted a welder friend to make the key for me. I got it from him for N500. Since 2013, I had gone to high-class events for operations.

I usually dressed like one of the guests and would mingle with other guests as if I was invited.

Later, I would go out as if I forgot something in my vehicle. And I would proceed to one of the expensive vehicles where I suspected there would be valuables. The master key could open any vehicle.

The operation that that fetched me the big money was at a campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and it was the PDP campaign rally.

I saw N3.2m inside one of the vehicles I opened. Nobody suspected anything. I used the money to get a Toyota Highlander. The police have taken the vehicle from me.

My wife and two children did not know this was the work I did. I stole in order to survive. I regret my actions now. I wish I could be forgiven."
