American Brendan Steele leads after day one at Travelers Championship

American Brendan Steele carded a round of 62 to end the opening round one stroke clear at the Travelers Championship on Thursday.

Steele went bogey-free on day one to sit atop the leaderboard on eight under at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

The 31-year-old, who is aiming to win his first PGA Tour title since taking out the Valero Texas open in 2011, had six birdies and an eagle during his faultless round to be a shot ahead of American duo Bud Cauley and Ryan Moore.

"I felt pretty good over the last couple months but haven't been getting a lot out of it," said Steele.

"I felt like I was really playing well at Byron Nelson and at Memorial and missed both cuts, and I think I was just getting a little sloppy.

"I was a little lazy behind the ball, not seeing the shot, not getting into it the right way and so the misses got a little wider."

Cauley and Moore both started on the back nine and produced 63s to be within striking distance of their American compatriot.

Fellow American Chad Campbell headlined a five-way tie for fourth spot at six under.

Campbell was joined by counterparts Joe Durant, Jeff Maggert, Scott Langley and Eric Axley.

South Korean K.J. Choi, Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Canada's Brad Fritsch were the only internationals to be inside the top 10 following their 65s - sitting four shots off the pace at five under.

Defending champion Ken Duke, Doug LaBelle II, Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka were also in a share of ninth spot.
