23-year-old man arrested for beheading 72-year-old woman

A young man has been arrested by the Ogun state police for the murder of a 72-year-old woman.

The disclosure was made by the state police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Monday, March 27, 2017, adding that the suspect committed the crime in Abigi community of the state, Premium Times reports.

Oyeyemi revealed that the suspect was apprehended by the police following a complaint lodged‎ at the police headquarters in the area by the son of the deceased, Ekundayo Shada.

According to the reports, Mr. Shada told the police that he had been on his way to the farm to see his mother on March 17 when he ran into the suspect holding a polythene bag.

The suspect reportedly dropped the bag and took to his heels as soon as he sighted Mr. Shada, which left the son of the victim curious.

Mr. Shada reportedly ran to the farm but was unable to find his mother, after which he returned to the polythene bag which had been left on the side of the road and was shocked to find his mother's severed head.

He immediately reported the incident to the Police

Premium Times reports that Oyeyemi said‎ the Divisional Police Officer for Abigi, Komolafe Omoniyi, immediately led detectives to the scene, combed the surrounding bush and finally arrested the suspect.

It was also revealed Mr. Ikugbayigbe confessed to the crime during the interrogation, claiming that “he had been having a running battle with the deceased over a portion of land”.

Mr. Oyeyemi disclosed that the severed head and the corpse have been deposited in the mortuary while the murder weapon, the cutlass the suspect used, has also been recovered.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has reportedly ordered the transfer of the suspect to the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
