Ogbunike Caves is not for the faint of heart

Let me walk you through what you'll do if you choose to go to Ogbunike Cave.

Ogbunike Caves is not for the faint of heart

You'll most likely come in through Onitsha. The journey to Ogbunike will take less than one hour.

Fast forward to the journey to the entrance of the cave. Fast forward past haggling price for a tour of the cave, and you're finally ready.

The first thing you see before you proceed toward the cave is a sign that reads the rules and regulations of the cave.

Then you'll proceed to the cave. Downward. First you'll see a flight of stairs that lead downward into the mouth of the cave.

“Bring some money for us to do opening ceremony,” your tour guide will say.

He’ll descend the stairs chanting praises to his ancestors and the deities of the cave.

Then he'll ask you to descend the stairs. One at a time if you're not alone.

At the mouth of the cave, you'll see basins with water dripping into them from roof of the cave.

Drink up if you want. Drink as much as you Can, you'll be losing your breath in a bit.

Now, remember that sign with the rules and regulations? Some rules are missing. Let's continue where the sign stops:

No. 10: Don't enter the cave with a backpack. There's barely enough space for you to wiggle through.

11. Don't enter if you're scared if you have phobias. There are thousands of bats. And it gets really stuffy, and tight.

Your guide will show you some tunnels. He'll tell you one of them leads to a place where you'll find a crocodile. Another leads to a place you'll find a python. Another, to a tortoise. Another, to a talking stone.

But you'll go through none of those. You'll go through another cave that'll have bats. Just bats. Loads of bats.

They'll fly at you, but don't panic. They won't fly in your face. Your guide will show you one end of a tunnel where Father Mbaka, a priest, spent 7 days fasting.

Half way through, you'll come out from a part with two cave entrances.

But make no mistake. You're not done yet. You're now headed for a place they call mountain.

It's shorter than the first, but the exit will have you crawling out of a slit in a rock.

Then we headed for the river. Natives call it River Nsikka.

Remember when 2Face said “After the show, na the party o"?

I think he was talking about this river.

So, pack a bag and hit the cave.

We hit the road again. We put Ogbunike behind us. Then back to Onitsha to get transport to Owerri.

Upper Iweka is the Oshodi of Anambra. It used to be a mess, a real mess, until the current governor, Obiano came along and brought some sanity along.

Then off went went, past Okija, past Ihiala, past Oguta, and then we hit our next stop.

The first thing you see when enter Owerri is the Assumpta Cathedral.

Night set in pretty quickly. Our backs needed resting from all the crawling.
