Looking through the eyes of  the  modern  man,  the  Orange Culture  AW16 collection  explores  the  idea  of  what communication would be without senses, as Yoruba words such as 'Oju, Eti and Enu' (Eyes, Ears and Mouth) are plainly inscribed across the knit wears, which are hard to miss.

The collection begs for an in-depth reflection beyond just the threads, cuts and colors. In regards to the inspiration behind the collection and lookbook direction, creative director, Adebayo Oke Lawal said:

“[The shoot] Reminds me of the times when I felt alone before my talent helped me find my voice. Almost blown away by norms and expectations until I found out exactly what my channel of communication was supposed to be. Clothes helped me connect with the world. Before I could sketch I remember feeling misunderstood, not heard and unable to speak. For me clothes became my senses before I learnt how to confidently utilise my actual senses.”

Using an array of fabrics such as, Linen, cotton,  denim, silk  and leather, the clothes themselves become the means of expression,  with  texture  and  print in creating  a medium  that  doesn’t  require words.

The materials and designs convey the power of the human senses of sight, hearing and touch, with the inclusion of bespoke  crochet  pieces  made  in  collaboration with Ed Goth  as  well  as  bold  hand  dyed  Adire  print  pieces  inspired  by  cells, senses  and  the  lack  thereof.

As  a  result,  the collection  represents  a replacement  for  the  senses  altogether  - providing  an  alternative  but nevertheless  effective response to self-expression.

It’s safe to say Bayo stays true to his overall brand aesthetic and continues to cater to his target audience with this collection. The exquisite tailoring, great texture and great pop of colors, with the inclusion of alluring prints and the introduction of Crochet pieces is reminiscent of the OC movement.

The collection is most definitely for the adventurous fashion lovers who love to continually explore and take risks with their style. The sheer fact that the collection is for the Autumn/Winter season, lets you know that this collection is not made for the average Nigerian who simply enjoys minimal and functional everyday pieces.
