Make-up up by Tife was started in 2012 by CEO, Ifetoluwa Aduloju, after years of cultivating her interest and skills in facial and bodily makeover. “I didn't have any particular capital to start with, you have to start building your inventory, skill and products together one day at a time. So I buy this lipstick today, this foundation tomorrow. I learn blending today I perfect my brows over time. So, allowances, salaries, hand-me-downs from my make-up teachers all contributed to my make-up inventory. My make-up box today is like my child. I'd rather you take one of my fingers than steal my box,” she says.
Aduloju, who says she is probably the most unconventional make-up artist ever, says each ‘job’ is an ‘as it comes’ process, and she allows the client get creative input while making sure they are part of the entire process (she also lets them look in the mirror while she works). Citing Bimpe Onakoya, Renny Vasquez, Lola Maja and Maria Malone as her major mentors, Aduloju keeps her work simple and lets it relate to the face it is on, constantly making sure that she sets her own trends rather than follow the whims of an already generalized industry.
“I am meticulous about hygiene and quality of products. so my brushes are usually clean before each 'job' (the make-up lingua for makeover), I do an obvious cleaning of my hands before I start and I try to have multiple wipes, eye products and any sharp tool,” says Aduloju. “I try 'new' and 'trending' looks on my own face first. When I have an idea I want to translate into a photo-shoot I try that as well. And I love doing shoots.”
Born May 29th, 1991, Aduloju is an indigene of Ekiti State and a graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University with a BA in History and International Relations. She is currently pursuing her PR certificate from the NIPR and finished training in Advertising from the 02 Academy.
According to Aduloju, her charges are negotiable but uncompromising or devaluing of her work, stating that she cannot be under priced, especially when she’s sure of her work and products used, resources and time consumed.
On the values that drive Make-up by Tife and advice to other youths that want to follow her footsteps in the make-up industry, Aduloju says, “I find my strength in creative makeup mostly with color, props and age-defying or character-defining artistry.
I believe your craft will stand you out. This business requires patience, and if you are only in it for the money, time will frustrate you out. So the passion, love I have for and the enjoyment I derive from it is what keeps me going.”
