Habits of successful people

My hostel mistress in primary school used to say that our habits become our characters and our characters become our destinies. In other words, success is cultivated through habits.

Morning habits

1. Wake up really early

You might want to set your alarm for 5am. Time is invaluable and like the saying goes, time waits for no man. To become successful, you need to wake up early enough each day so that you can complete all your tasks. This is probably the most important morning ritual for success.

Waking up early ensures that you are not late for any scheduled appointments or events that day. It also gives you enough time to take care of personal grooming, personal chores and personal hygiene before you take on your workload for the day.

Michelle Obama revealed in an interview with Oprah that she wakes up early so that she can take care of herself before her day starts fully.

Time is invaluable, it can never be regained, and that is why you must make the most of it if you want to be successful. Waking up early ensure that you have more control in your early hours, and you also have enough time to take care of the things that matter to you.

You might start this ritual by waking up 20 minutes earlier than your usual time, and then you can gradually adjust.

2. Do one Hour of Power

You need to re-motivate yourself and replenish your motivation every day because motivation does not last forever. Accomplishing a task becomes easier and more important to you when you have invested a sizeable amount of time and emotions in it.

Watch inspirational videos, read self-development books or listen to motivational speakers during this time. Your hour of power should include listening to inspirational and empowering quotes to boost your imagination for the day. Refreshing your mind and re-inspiring yourself is an important morning ritual for success.

3. Do your hardest task first

You should start the day with accomplishing your most difficult task first. With that out of the way, it becomes easier to get the others done.

Also, your willpower and drive is high and fresh in the morning and the best way to take advantage of it is to accomplish your most daunting task for the day.

4. Meditate

You need a few minutes to calm your senses, relax your nerves and be guided by inner peace. Forget all the rush, and enjoy your own company and silence for a few minutes. Quiet your mind and fill your body and mind with positive energy.

Focus on your breathing, heartbeat and silence; recite an inspiring and soothing mantra during your meditation time. If you are a religious or spiritual person, saying your morning prayer during this period is a great idea.

Morning meditation and prayer is a great way to begin your day as it fills you with positive energy.

5. Plan

Take a few minutes to plan, strategize and map out your routine and direction for the day. This is necessary so that you can be sure that you’re going in the right direction of achieving your goals. Take at least 15 minutes to go over your goals, review your tasks and schedule your breaks. This helps your day be more meaningful and less stressful.

6. Get active

In other words, exercise! Exercising will help your body wake up fully and oxygenate this leaves your cells active and ready for the day’s task.

You don’t need a gym membership to exercise every morning. There are simple yet beneficial exercises that you can do in the comfort of your living room. Exercising keeps your body fit, builds endurance and stamina and leaves you feeling refreshed.

Even Barrack Obama knows the importance of exercising because he said: “The rest of my time will be more productive if you give me my workout time.”

7. Eat a healthy breakfast

It is important that you fuel your body with the right nutrients that will supply you energy for the day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and so you should make sure that you eat a nutritionally balanced breakfast.

A healthy breakfast combination provides your body with energy and gets the mind ready for the day. Your breakfast should include fruits, milk, nuts etc.

8. Attend to only urgent emails

If you want to be successful in life, spending your mornings exchanging emails and instant messages with friends and acquaintances is not how you’ll get there. Attending to your social media pages and chatting away is not the right start to a day that you wish to be productive.

As such you should attend to only urgent work related emails in the morning. Dedicate 15 to 20 minutes to respond to your most urgent emails at the start of the day.

9. Ask yourself a fundamental question

“If today was your last day on earth, would you still do the things you planned to do today?”

This question helps put things in perspective. If you answer no to this question more than once in a week, then you definitely have to reevaluate your life and goals and make changes accordingly.
