Peter and Paul Okoye have a ‘fight’, but are they planning a new album?

Three things are constant in the Nigerian entertainment industry; Wizkid will releases a hit song, D’banj will make a business move to make people wonder, and Psquare will fight publicly in the market square.

In this case, ‘market square’ refers to social media; today’s replica of the village open ground, where everything of note is held. Just like in the golden days of Igbo tradition, every special day of the year, some imaginary e-town crier shows up, beats the ceremonial gong and people stream out of their houses to the centre of town to watch a spectacle.

For the past 4 years, Psquare has provided that spectacle. They have carried themselves, with all of their prestige, success, mystery and goodwill to the social media market square, and fought publicly like kids, muddying themselves up, throwing low punches, and discovering new ways to let strangers into their family business.

It’s usually dirty stuff. Problems between twin brothers that cannot be settled in the comfort of their palatial homes are cut into tiny pieces, moved to social media, and assembled in front of strangers, fans, the press and families who take turns in contributing to what they know nothing about. Then they blow the whistle, and the fight begins. Just another regular year in the Nigerian music industry.

With the high amount of its occurrence, it has become a norm. It’s abnormal to not see Psquare fight. The sun will rise, the evenings will boast a gentle breeze, and Psquare has to fight, for the culture. That’s how low it is.

The latest of this ‘fight culture’ has begun, and it goes thus.

On September 14, 2017, Peter Okoye took to his Instagram page, where he wrote;

"If it makes you Happy, no one else's opinion should Matter. #LiveLifeHappy #WordsOfHappiness #KoolestDude #MrP."

However, he sure didn't know he was opening a can of worms as his followers wanted to dig further. They questioned his use of his name "Mr P" as his fans presumed he only uses that name when there is a feud going on with his twin brother, Peter.

Peter, went on the defensive by replying the follower that he has been called "Mr P" over the years, adding that it is the name people call him as an individual.

While Peter was trying to downplay that there was a rift, his twin brother, Paul who just recently welcomed the birth of his twins with wife, Anita, took to his Instagram page on September 17, 2017, to issue a subliminal warning.

He wrote, "Back to naija don't take my silence for granted.... only a woman can come where brothers are working in peace and destroy it #youknowyourself .... try me this time ... I swear Nyash go open you will know that blood is thicker and stronger than juju..."

This might have a lot to do with the birth of Paul's twins, as he also made reference to them in his message on Instagram

" Since the announcement of the arrival of these two....i swear some people have been restless, they cant even sleep, they are not at peace #jelousy #envy....I swear if na plot of land some pple go don buy 10 plots lol.... all these distractions cant stop God's blessings.... #doubledouble #somethingisfishing"

On the surface, this is trouble. But you can’t rule out that it comes conveniently at a time when the twins are ripe for an album. Why so?

That’s because they pulled this move in 2014. Remember when that year when the media was rife with reports about the twins fighting? This was two years after they had lost their mother. They physically had a fight, and the report was sent to Linda Ikeji, who reported and everyone went berserk. But guess what, that little trouble in paradise became the “Double Trouble” album. Other times when they have fought, they have found new ways to sneak out new music.

2016’s fight marked the time when they would go on to drop solo records, before reuniting to tap into the ‘Pon pon’ wave with ‘Away’. In 2017 they have dropped ‘Nobody Ugly’, and there is talk about a new album.

Nobody truly knows if this fight is what it is; a true repetitive clash of brothers. Or is it just another PR dance before they announce a new album which might be deservedly titled “Fighting Blessings?”
