Majek Fasek, Orlando Julius, Wrinkars Experience kick start music festival

On the opening day of the 2014 edition of the Lagos Jazz Series, veterans and legends who shaped the genres of funk, Afro-funk, Rock, Highlife, Afrobeat and Reggae, opened up the yearly music festival.

At Muri Okunola Park, V.I, Lagos, hundreds sat on the beautiful grass and where taken back in time as they listened to classic hits from the decades past.

This year's Lagos Jazz series was opened by the highlife vet Orlando Julius. After performing a song, this year's edition officially started.

The opening act was historical. A popular band that rocked the Nigerian scene Wrinkars Experience came on stage. It was a historical affair as the band hadn't performed in 37 years. Wrinkars Experience existed from 1972-1973 creating two hits 'Money To Burn' and the evergreen 'Fuel For Love'.

The group was made up of mostly Cameroonians. The lead singer was a Nigerian by the name of Dan Ian. Now a chief in his hometown, the ex-school teacher and former rock star stepped up on stage in all red get up. Rolling back the years, Wrinkars Experience performed three songs, 'Killing Suspense', Money To Burn', and the crowd favourite 'Fuel For Love', which they performed twice.

The next act was a straight shocker. Unarguably Nigeria's greatest Reggae singer Majek Fasek was the next act who followed. Immediately he appeared on stage, the crowd gathered to the front of the stage to see the iconic singer perform.

Much has been said and written about Majek's physical appearance, and state of mind. Despite being ravaged by drugs, the old timer still possesses his riveting voice which brought down a heavy downpour once in Nigeria. After rambling about war, left hand steering, Fela and Fashola, Majek kicked off his performance. It was erratic, brilliant and lovely to watch all at once. At times it looked as if he wasn't in control, but even in his state Majek was a beauty to watch. Holding the guitar, and drilling out instructions to his band, Majek gave a solid performance. Of course he had to end it with the rainmaker 'Send Down The Rain'.

The closing performance was done by Orlando Julius who displayed a total mastery of his genre of music.
