"Feeling The N***a" becomes star's saving grace

D'banj's ‘Feeling The Nigger’ song, with American R&B and hip hop recording artist, songwriter, and record producer, Akon, is not just a song. It's a gem of a jam.

2014 has begun, and one man who is currently in good stead right now is DB Records CEO, D’banj. He has a good song out, which is steadily picking in rotation and acceptance, and what more, he’s in the news!

This is in stark contrast to his previous years, with fans thinking up new ways to express their discontent and displeasure with his songs. But this time, he seems to have found a good mix for his undoubted talent, vocal ability, and dynamism.

His new song, ‘Feeling The Nigger’, with American R&B and hip hop recording artist, songwriter, and record producer, Akon, is a gem of a jam. Produced by in-house music maker, DeeVee, the song is a fine blend of African folk tune and urban pop delivery.

Simply put, the song comes from eastern Nigeria. The basic tune can pass for a soundtrack from any cheap and unprofessional Nollywood flick, shot with love from Asaba. But DeeVee showed his mastery of production, and transformed what in raw form is repulsive, into a jewel. We are talking about a miracle here.

After the cold reception (negative, some would say), from the past 3 years, 2015 needed to see D’banj return to the basics of why he became a star. In recent years, D’banj had metamorphosed into a brand whore, one who throws himself at any corporate money, representing all and sundry. Most fresh in our memory is his recent deal with Apple that saw him promote the gold Beat by Dre, evening sneaking it onto the President’s ears.

Many fans and critics had written him off as a failed singer, with the belief that his priorities lie far away from the studio and the beauty of sounds.

But now he is back. And it is better.

‘Feeling The Nigger’ is currently hitting clubs all over the country, it is on heavy rotation in radio stations, the internet downloads have skyrocketed with amazing numbers being recorded. A video for the song has already been shot and the release is imminent.

Do we hate this ? No. What many fans feel is relief. No matter what has gone under the water, D’banj is loved by many. Our anger at ghis inability to make good music is positive. It’s a show of concern and love at the man who warmed his way into our hearts with the best of singing. This was a man who brought us immense joy, so we were sad to see him lose himself.

We are happy. D’banj has found his saving grace.
