"Lagos will always be my home"

The singer who has taken up permanent residence in her birth country, France, reveals that Lagos, Nigeria, will always be her true home.

Asa has revealed that Lagos is her one true home.

In  an interview with My Africa Podcast, the ‘Bed of Stones’ singer revealed to host, Andre Blaze, her fascination with Lagos and its dynamics.

“Lagos is one of the best places. I used to tell people, ’Look, forget about it. When you come to Lagos we are going back to the beginning. I don’t know maybe it was when Moses took the guys across the sea, but that is how Lagos is to me.

“Drop all that fancy attitude, and come back to the beginning. In fact, Lagos is even cool. You wanna go elsewhere in Nigeria?...”

Aṣa was born in Paris, France to her Nigerian parents. Her family returned to live in Nigeria when she was two. The singer further emphasised on the reasons why she loves Lagos, stating that her inspiration and ‘ginger’ comes from the peculiarities of the megacity.

“Lagos will humble you, and Lagos will give you stories. Lagos is where it is not all refined, although we want a good life, people deserve to have electricity, like just like when you go out, you see things.

“Life will go easy, and there will be commerce, and people won’t have to stress 10 times. But really, I have to always come back to Lagos to get the kick. I need that ginger, you know how they say it. Elsewhere it’s all slow and ballerina, and all gliding.”

Aṣa grew up in Alagbole, a border town in Ogun state near Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria. Twenty years later, Aṣa returned to Paris where her life as an artist took off.
