It's that time of the year when we recognize female actors who gave us the best movie moments in 2016.

Nollywood is home to some of the most talented and beautiful actresses in Nigeria. 2016 saw us fall in love with many popular actresses once again because of their unique acting skills. The year also revealed highly talented actors we previously weren’t paying attention to.

It's that time of the year when Pulse Movies recognizes actresses who gave us the year's best screen performances that thrilled us, made us laugh and presented interpretations that were emotionally, mentally and visually captivating.

From Bimbo Akintola to Somkele Idhalama, check out 10 best actors of 2016, in no particular order.

1. Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama as Ada in "93 Days" and Omawumi in "The Arbitration"

Somkele didn't just stroll into the Nigerian film industry. We remember her from "Gidi Up." It's 2016, and there has been no stopping for the actress who has featured in three 2016 big movies. The actress alongside OC Ukeje, were selected as the first ever TIFF International Rising Stars from the City to City spotlight programme.

Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama kicked off her 2016 cinematic experience with "Arbitration," where she thrilled viewers as the confident lawyer, Omawumi Horsfall.

She continued to exhibit her craft with her interpretation of the character Ada in "93 Days." Idhalama owns the character Ada with so much heart and soul in one performance.

Idhalama's performances in "93 Days" is an undeniable highlight of the year in Nollywood.

2. Bimbo Akintola as Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh in "93 Days."

In what can be termed the best performance of the year, Akintola as the late Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh in  "93 Days" is captivating, charming and powerful.

Watching the actress as the late doctor of First Consultant Hospital, who prevented the spread of  deadly Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, would remind every movie lover why she is a veteran, and a talented one.

You could watch "93 Days" on mute and still feel the emotions play out on Akintola's face as she delivers a powerful performance.

3. Sola Sobowale  as Tinuade Coker in "The Wedding Party"

Sola Sobowale is most certainly the life of the movie and is at the top of her game playing the viewers favourite Tinuade Coker.

Nobody else could bring this much life to this character as she did. As a typical caring and protective Nigerian or particularly Yoruba mother, Sobowale nails the act.

Her performance is so authentic and awe-inspiring, it's easy to get drawn into the reality of her character in every conceivable way.

She uses her face to convey several emotions and messages. Sola Sobowale is the engine that keeps "The Wedding Party" running in its genre.

4. Ireti Doyle as  Funlayo Johnson in "The Arbitration"

Doyle defined class and talent in the 2016 Niyi Akinmolayan movie, "The Arbitration."

Currently in her golden phase,  Doyle plays Funlayo with incredible emotional depth, grace and quiet dignity worth applauding.

The actress featured in quite a number of movies this year, but none of them takes away how absolutely riveting she is in the well-made movie "The Arbitration."

5. Memry Savanhu as Eunicein "76"

The actress doesn't grab your attention with her dialogue, rather she mesmerizes with her mannerism. She introduces her mastery in acting with an outstanding interpretation of Eunice, Captain Dewa's neighbour whose hobby is without doubt, dancing.

Savanhu as Eunice is an absolute delight to watch. She is funny and charming. It feels like she is playing several characters, and it is impossible not to be attracted to them all.

6. Rita Dominic as Suzy in  "76"

Rita returns in a quietly impressive movie star performance in "76." She draws the viewers in with her emotional and flawless interpretation of the character Suzy.

Her performance in "76 has earned her an encore of the 2013/2014 awards season where she led nominations with her performance in "The Meeting."

7. Kehinde Bankole as Moji in "Beyond Blood"

Her portrayal of Moji, who after a series of uncontrollable events, decides to run away from her fears, is worth applauding.

Bankole effortlessly projects a tender and aggressive young woman set out to discover herself and overcome her fears.

The most beautiful thing about her performance is her ability to communicate so expressively with little more than a glance or a look.

8. Adesua Etomi as  Dara Olujobi in "The Arbitration"

Adesua Etomi as Dara Olujobi brings in the complete Etomi quotient to the film and acts her part very well. She is just as brilliant as the Etomi movie lovers are accustomed to.

She switches between emotional, confused, manipulative, strong and weak, and she switches just convincingly fine.

9. Nansy Isime as Carmen in "Gidi Blues"

Isime takes a supporting role in the Femi Odugbemi movie, and then she steals the whole film out from under the lead character.

Her character Carmen is one of the most beautiful, engaging part of the movie. She is charming, realistic and authentic as Carmen.

She impresses in her role, introducing an actor to watch out for in 2017.

10. Ngozi Nwosu as Mama Tiwa in "Skinny Girl in Transit"

Comfortably in her zone as Mama Tiwa, Ngozi Nwosu delivers a flat-out killer comic performance in "Skinny Girl in Transit."

As a funny, annoying and dramatic  Nigerian mum, Nwosu occupies each of those roles fully and convinceably.
