In this latest interview with Pulse.ng, Tope Tedela winner of Best Actor (Drama) at the African Magic Viewer's Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2014 talks about his career, the thrill of winning and his passion for music.
Tope started his career with M-Net. The musician, actor and model graced our studio and was a delight to listen to. We have no doubt that he has a very bright future in entertainment and we can't wait to see more of him.
Who is Tope Tedela?
Tope is a young man trying to live his life.I was born and raised in Lagos. First in the family of four children. I'm from a place called Igbaraodo in Ekiti state. I love life, I love people, I love trying to be of help to people around me. I attended University Of Lagos with a degree in Mass Communication and I'm trying to be an actor.
How did you begin your career in acting?
I have always been fascinated by motion pictures, I remember sometime in primary school when my friends and I wanted to do a play for ourselves, I was supposed to get costumes, I was hoping my father won’t follow me to school the next day but unfortunately he followed me and he found out that it was just my friends and I that wanted to do the play and it was not permitted by the school. I was beaten. Moving forward, I just realized that as hard as I tried to get away from acting, it just use to stare me in the face. When I was going to senior secondary school, because everyone was going to science class I also went to science class but they booted me out after the second term and I went back to arts where I did well.
The movie a 'Mile from Home' just won you the best actor in a drama at the just concluded AMVCA, what was the experience like?
It was surreal, it was like time stilled for a bit. I felt okay, it seemed like they is hope for emerging actors and the younger generations of actors.
Did you think you will win?
No! How would I know that I would win the award? I thought about it and I knew that it would not be a bad idea to win it but I wasn’t getting my hopes high, I felt like I stood a chance and I was just keeping my fingers crossed to see how things would turn out and I'm so grateful to God for the way things turned out.
Are you working on any project now?
Well, yea I have movies that I'm meant to be shooting soon and couple of movies that I have done coming to the theaters soon.
What is the craziest thing you have ever done on set?
I'm not really much of a crazy person, but I remember this particular occasion when we were shooting and people were just shouting around me( it’s not like I did something crazy) the director had already asked us to rehearse the scene and I didn't know when I screamed SHUT UP!! And everyone was silent and I was like “wow” and people were like “wow”.
Have u ever had a celebrity crush?
When I was younger, I really liked Chioma Chukwuka, she seemed very cool on screen. I really admired her appearance.
So, I saw you with the guitar, do you play?
Yes, I write music, I compose songs , I'm a music lover.
What do you think about Nollywood?
I think Nollywood is a great brand that has against all odds been able to establish itself as a force to reckon with not just in Africa but in the world. We are far from where we were, I believe we are taking over.
What do you have for upcoming actors that want to go far?
Surround yourself with people who motivate, challenge and encourage you. The thing about success from the little I have seen is that it is not a journey you embark on alone, at some point you will need one or two people to talk to you. Besides, you need to preach to yourself that you can do it. Get trained, get the requisite skills and pray.
