Patrick Dempsey, who played Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in "Grey's Anatomy," is grateful for being a part of the show.

In an exclusive interview with People, Dempsey spoke on leaving the show after 11 seasons.

"I think after a certain period of time, no matter how much money you make, you want control out of your own schedule," said Dempsey.

"It had been long enough. It was time for me to move on with other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a couple of years earlier. I stayed a bit longer than I should have," he added.

Dempsey's character on the show died in the 11th episode following a tragic car accident.  Following his death, fans launched a petition on Change.org to bring back his character.

The 13th season of "Grey's Anatomy" ended with Alex and April having a baby boy, Arizona leaving Callie, Jo rejecting Alex' proposal, and Amelia and Owen's wedding.

“Grey’s Anatomy” season 13 will air in September  2016.
