What's the importance of an original music score in a film?

I miss those days most of our Nollywood movies offered us unforgettable original soundtracks - the days of "Chain Reaction," "Fuji House of Commotion," "Witches," "Eji Owuro" among others.

I have always loved film and TV soundtracks. Most times I set out in search of a new artists I haven't heard of before, after a movie.

What are your thoughts on music in film, as well as movies that are particularly memorable for their music?

I miss those days most of our Nollywood movies offered us unforgettable original soundtracks - the days of "Chain Reaction," "Fuji House of Commotion," "Everyday  People," "Witches," "Eji Owuro" among others. Those are just recent examples of killer soundtracks.

So, how important is music in a film?

Even if I forget what "Fuji House of Commotion" was all about, I can't forget the whole "wife number one is companion" lyrics. I still remember the movie "Lost Kingdom" because of its music. So, take it or leave it, fans would remember the music from a movie more than a well crafted sound effects.

Going foreign now, I barely remember "One Tree Hill," but I totally remember the whole "I don't want to be anything other than what I want to be,"  and that is enough for me hit the market for all seasons of the series.

There's generally this thing about music. For most people, music helps them get over their sorrows. Music is just everything. It touches the soul.

In films, music adds to the emotional quality of a film. It makes it possible for one to connect with the characters, plot and a movie generally. Imagine watching a cozy, so romantic or any intense  scene, and there's a deafening silence, you would just get bored, and find it difficult to follow the emotional ups and downs of the film.

Ishaya Bako's was a great one, but who can get over the deafening silence that came with the movie? We loved the Brymo track that played occasionally, but I'm not going to remember the movie because of a Brymo song.

Ever started a movie, and on hearing the music, you already the genre of the screening movie. A comedy film always comes with a playful tone. A thriller has this intense music score, and a romantic drama has it's kind of score.

Music sets the tone and mood of the movie. The way the score comes in for the first time, makes it possible to know the level of drama you're in for.

Music is used to solidify the filmmaker's intentions with a scene. Even if there's a switch in plot or scene, music can be used to pass the message.

I remember those days of "Second Chance" and "Catalina and Sebastian," each characters and couples in series had their own music score, and it was just perfect.

It's one thing to have Dbanj's "Fall in Love" as your soundtrack, and it's another to have DBanj create an original song for your movie. We have seen recent films like "Falling" The Figurine"undefinedamong others present us with very original scores.

Maybe getting an artist to record an original score for your movie as a filmmaker may be extra cost, but if Nollywood is really interested in getting there, then some 'little' things must be considered, and an original score is never overrated.

Next time you sit down to watch a movie, try to listen to the music, and discover how it enhances and what you are seeing. We also hope our filmmakers cease to overlook the importance of soundtrack in a film.
