Frances McDormand wins best actress for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

Frances McDormand has won the best actress award at the 90th Academy Awards for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

The 60-year-old actress defeated strong competition that included three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Sally Hawkins.

A five-time Oscar nominee, McDormand last won the award in 1997 for her role as police chief Marge Gunderson in “Fargo.”

Receiving the prize, she thanked her family,  “Three Billboards” director Martin McDonagh, and the Coen brothers, who directed “Fargo.”

She finished her speech by saying: “I have two words to leave with you tonight: inclusion rider.”

About "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police.

When his second-in-command, Officer Dixon -- an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence -- gets involved, the battle is only exacerbated.

The film stars the actress alongside  Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Abbie Cornish, John Hawkes and Peter Dinklage.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"also won Sam Rockwell a Best Supporting Actor prize for his performance as Jason Dixon.

McDormand's role as a grieving mother in the comedy-drama has earned her other best lead actress awards, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and SAG Award.
